Trivia about Symphony No.6 in F major Opus 68 (1)
Ludwig van Beethoven gave the first movement the descriptive title 'Awakening of cheerful feelings on arrival in the countryside', breaking with the purely abstract conventions of classical symphonies. The piece received its premiere at a marathon, four-hour concert in Vienna in December 1808, where it was performed alongside the Fifth Symphony in an unheated hall. Rather than attempting a literal imitation of nature, Beethoven insisted the movement was intended to express general emotion rather than provide direct tone painting.
