Trivia about Pata Pata
- Makeba was frankly baffled by the runaway global success of the track, often calling it one of her silliest songs because the lyrics were simply about an informal township dance move rather than anything politically profound.
- After she married Black Panther leader Stokely Carmichael in 1968, the US establishment panicked, abruptly cancelling her American concert dates and record contracts, which effectively forced her to pack up and move to Guinea.
- The tune took on a surreal second life in the 1980s when it was reworked into a French-language pop hit by Coumba Gawlo, which somehow spent weeks at the top of the European charts decades after the original release.

Why does this page exist?
I’m a geek (specifically a music geek) and as any fellow obsessive will tell you, there is a particular kind of itch that only information can scratch.
Quite often, I’ll hear a track on 6Music that hits just right, and I instantly want to know more. Who is the artist? What’s the track called? Is there a backstory involving an accidental synthesizer fire or a fallout with a legendary producer? I need to know everything, and I need to know it before the next song starts.
That’s exactly why I built this. Think of it as your permanent digital companion to the station. You just leave it open in a tab, and whenever you hear something that makes you go “Hold on, what’s this?”, you can just glance over and get the answer. It’s for those of us who don’t just listen to music but want to live inside the liner notes. No more fumbling for your phone while the song fades out; the truth is right here, waiting for you.
