Perhaps something has made me petty and a bit nasty since strapping on two wheels and feeling threatened throughout my existence of city cycling. The first time I did Critical Mass, I loved every moment – I describe it as allow one to feel like a cyclist rather a rat – it’s empowering, and may lead towards an anarchist ontology where power is relational, not given.
But, that feeling of being a rat, perhaps, has given me a sense of schadenfreude whenever I see the misery of those wankers in the 4-wheel tin cans. In the hefty traffic of London, where people can be stuck in traffic for hours, for miles, being about the whizz past them by a (responsible) speed is a delight – it’s essentially a massive fuck you to the trap of public and private transport.
So, when I read a headline of a ‘Kingston driver ‘aimed car at cyclist,’ missed – and crashed into hair salon’, all I can think is ‘HA! FUCK YOU’. Very Nelson Muntz.
Where is my concern for the well being of the driver? Even if she is a complete and total shit, she’s still a human being. Where’s my compassion for the owner and workers of the hair salon?
The fact the car in question is an Audi. Well, the Audi probably has an extremely good safety rating. So, essentially, fuck her. If London banned cars, generally, it’d be a much, much nicer place. Particuarly expensive cars.
