I was completely fitness-phobic my entire life. I got a bike to commute to work to save money on public transport and because I lived too far to walk to work. I was very apprehensive, but took a few adult cycling lessons which helped me build my confidence on the roads [your local council might have provision for this]. I never thought I would be a cyclist, but here I am. If I can do it, so can anyone.
For me starting to cycle was the first step towards getting fit. Doing this has changed and improved every single aspect of my life. It sounds far-fetched, but the bike has helped me get fitter than I ever thought I would be and also doing more physical exercise helps me to moderate my depression and anxiety, which I have suffered with for years.
I now cycle every single day of my life, without fail, and I love it. Rain or shine, a cycle to work every morning wakes me up. Cycling home clears my mind and lets me decompress from the stresses of the day.
Also, zooming past traffic-jam-bound cars can be massively satisfying ๐
