Geraint Thomas saw his ranking go up to the second spot in the UCI WorldTour after he won the E3 Harelbeke last Friday and nabbed the third place at the Ghent-Wevelgem last Sunday.
Richie Porte, another Sky team member, holds the first place in the UCI WorldTour ranking. The Australian cyclist was able to push ahead to the top spot after he won the Volta a Catalunya last Sunday. Last month, Porte won Paris-Nice. A month earlier in January he won second place in the Tour Down Under.
With 525 points in the team ranking, the British squad takes the leading position while the second place goes to Etixx-QuickStep with 394 points. Third placer Katusha has a total of 303 points.
As for rankings by country, Australia takes the top spot. Italy lands second while Spain moves up to the third place. Mainly due to Thomas’ wins, the United Kingdom is on the sixth place. Victories nabbed by Adam Yates of Orica-GreenEdge also contributed to England’s ranking.
Some events score the teams more points than others. WorldTour points are given for one-day race, tour stage and stage race total finishing positions for counting events. A cyclist, for example, receives twice as many points after winning the Tour de France compared to winning the Eneco Tour.
Last year, Spanish cyclist Alejandro Valverde of team Movistar got the top spot in the WorldTour ranking while England’s Chris Froome from Sky ended the tour at the seventh place.

The UCI World Tour is the most popular yearly elite road cycling tour for male cyclists. It is comprised of 28 events and an annual ranking system. These 28 events are made up of three Grand Tours, five Monument one-day races, nine further stage races that take place in Europe, seven one-day races, a stage race in Australia, two one-day races in Canada and a team-time trial race.
