Sagan Closing Gap on Dumoulin, Martin with another top-three finish in Switzerland

Cannondale rider Peter Sagan continued his solid performance at the Tour of Switzerland with another top-three finish in Wednesday’s fifth stage. The Slovakian has already used his powerful sprint to capture a stage victory on Monday, and is steadily closing the gap between himself and overall leaders Tony Martin and Tom Dumoulin.

Martin has so far held on to the six second lead he established in the race’s opening stage, but has failed to capture any stage victories since then.

Switzerland has seen a strong performance from the whole Cannondale team, and Sagan is joined in the top ten by teammate Davide Formolo. Formolo currently sits sixth in general classification in this, his first appearance at the Tour de Suisse.

Sagan has consistently performed well in Switzerland, having captured points classification victories here in each of the past three competitions. If Sagan can continue to perform well this year, he may find himself in the Tour’s yellow jersey for the first time since he captured the first stage of the 2012 competition.

In order to win, though, Sagan will need to show that he can still climb. Thus far the race has been sprint-heavy, with few difficult climbs and almost all flat finishes. This weekend’s final two stages, however, feature summit finishes and two category-one climbs in the final stage.
