I had absolutely no idea this skatepark even existed until this morning. I was looking at one of the wildly inaccurate online skatepark directories and entered ‘Ipswich’ in the search box. Much to my surprise Gainsborough skatepark popped up. I know the main Ipswich Skatepark in the centre of town. I know the excellent Ipswich NW skatepark (Whitehouse area). But I had no idea Gainsborough had a skatepark.
So me and the girl jumped in the car and headed of in search of Gainsborough Skatepark.
It was easy enough to find, we parked in the Gainsborough Sports Centre car park and walked the few yards to the skatepark. It’s part of a recreation area that has exceptionally high fencing around it, and at night it appears to be more secure than Fort Knox.
The skatepark itself was a little fenced off area (seriously, how many fences are need?) and consisted of… well not much. There’s an area of smooth concrete that could be handy if you wanted someone to practice any tricks that required no street furniture or…. anything. The only other ramps in this skatepark are very small metal jobbies. There really is very little here. It’s like someone described what a skatepark should be over the phone, in a busy pub, at the end of a very loud gig.
Gainsborough Skatepark is not an exciting prospect to me. We didn’t skate, although this was more to do with the torrential rain than anything else. I always appreciate that for any skate facility to exist it means that someone, somewhere has put in a lot of work and spent considerable time getting a dream to become a reality. My mum used to tell me that if I couldn’t think of anything nice to say I should say nothing at all. So….
