Okay they’re technically an Essex band, being based just over the border in Manningtree, but SuperGlu are a band that Ipswich has taken to their heart. When SuperGlu first hit the stages of Suffolk it was clear from the outset that here was a band with that special ‘something’ that would take them to far away places with exotic sounding names.
Now everyone who has seen SuperGlu play locally and has nodded their head in appreciation, or guarded their pint from fellow enthusiastic crowd members, won’t be surprised to hear the band is going places. Literally.
It has been confirmed by a source in the band (cough, Ben Ward) that they have been booked to play the insanely prestigious music industry shindig that is South by South West in Texas, in that there US of A. SXSW (the ‘street’ name for South By South West) is a stepping stone that some of the biggest acts today have cheerfully stomped upon. You can be forgiven for not having heard of SXSW, but we’re sure you will have heard of some of the bands who launched their careers there. Acts like Florence and the Machine and Royal Blood.
But bands like SuperGlu don’t get to go places by their own efforts alone. Bands get places when they have great support, and that’s something that Suffolk can be proud to have given SuperGlu in spades. From their record label AntiGen Records, to the brilliant team at BBC Introducing Suffolk, right down to the fans who pack out the gigs and the landlords who encourage the rabble, we can all be proud that yet again our county has played a part in helping something brilliant and creative to flourish.
