It’s very strange at the Pool Club tonight. A club normally full of drunken street gangs beating the living daylights out of everyone, but tonight we just got a nice, humble bunch of guys and gals.
Nothing but Talking Heads, Super Furry Animals and Elastica pumping out of the PA and just a lovely atmosphere. Just wished every gig in Ipswich was this laid back.
I have never seen The Rollocks before but heard pretty bad things about them, plus to be honest the drummer looks a bit like a twat with the hat and the leather but I found this very entertaining. It sounds they spend their practices doing bongs and listening to the MC5, which I can only say ‘nice one’. Sure, it’s pretty dumb rock n roll, but did you expect Tangerine Dream?
First couple of times I saw Rosalita I have to say I wasn’t too keen on them. There were a couple of songs there but they sounded too much like a standard NME band. But in a matter of months after kicking out the guitarist and getting a keyboard player they’re gotten so much better.
They figured out how to write a decent number of good pop songs and make people dance like bastards. And some good bass lines too.
What can I write about The Waxing Captors? Every time I see them they’re always the same – fucking brilliant. Tears every arsehole of every band around the area. They played fucking loud, they were crazy, they were scary and the Luke (voice) grabbed hold of me at one point.
Only letdown was no ‘Slot Machine’. One thing I liked to point out is a lot of people like to compare them to the Pixies, but The Pixies (apart from the Sufer Rosa era, by far their best album) were a straightforward pop band, this isn’t straightforward. This can be called pop, but there’s more to it. Catchy noise I’d call it.

This was my first gig in Rosalita (clearly I improved things!)
