Things Found In Sharks + Tornado Smith + All Or None at The Steamboat, Ipswich – 5th August 2005

Tonight was more of a party for Barnie’s birthday than a gig, that’s Barnie from Things Found In Sharks not the number-crunching Dinosaur.

All Or None are a band that seems to waver violently between just okay and total heavy brutality, tonight was a brutal night and everyone loved them. Barnie even joined them on stage for a Fugazi cover (I had to be told it was a cover, I’m so un-scene).

They sound a bit like The Refused, if The Refused had the most knackered equipment known to man (including a bass with no controls, with half the body missing), I don’t think I’ve ever witnessed this band get through a set without at least something breaking.

Tornado Smith are fast becoming one of our faves round these parts, sharps suits and they call themselves the ‘Genitals Of Rock’ (I think I’ve got that right). They pound along with complexity just one shake from pop but with enough grunt to blow yer socks off.

Things In Sharks were great as always, if a little loose tonight, thanks to Barnie’s pre-show lubrication. Everyone round here seems to know the whole TFIS set these days and it was great to see so many people singing along to their fine Dinosaur Jnr/ Split Enz stylings. I got so excited I thought I’d try dancing with the kids, one piggy back and a grazed knee later I decided I’d made a bad choice.
