A fascinating account of the development of the steam passenger locomotive on the Southern Railway from the grouping until Nationalization in I948. The story evolves from the amalgamation of the three major constituent companies through the emergence of Ashford under Maunsell’s leadership as the predominant design influence, development of the ‘Arthurs’,
Nelsons’,
‘Schools’ and
finally the impact of Bulleid and his Pacifics.
“The inside story has been told with feeling and accuracy, and brought alive by a combination of design problems, policy changes and records of locomotive performance which explain so many of the somewhat contradictory moves that have been made over the twenty-five years covered.’
Railway Magazine
“Told in loving detail … Mr Nock is a locomotive engineer who knows what it is like to go full tilt down Seaton Bank on the footplate of an engine in urgent need of workshop attention, and he brings a practical man’s interest into his history!’
