US East (N. Virginia) region is region us-east-1
If you’ve been following nice tidy instructions for setting up SSL with your Amazon S3 bucket then you might have come unstuck when looking for the us-east-1 region.
us-east-1 region and why it’s so damned important
If you are setting up a free SSL certificate from Amazon AWS Certificate Manager (ACM) you’ve probably seen some dire warnings about how important it is to set up the SSL while your console is in us-east-1 region mode.
If you try and set up a ACM SSL in any region other than us-east-1 it will not work. You will not pass GO, you will not collect £200
The good news is that as soon as you land at ACM you can switch region using a dropdown that appears on the top right of your screen. The middling news is that there is no us-east-1 listed once you pull down the drop down box. The regions are listed by place name, rather than region name.
The good news is that if you select US East (N. Virginia) then you are in fact selecting region us-east-1
This is just one of many ‘need to know’ issues that relate to Amazon AWS. But the good news is there are lots of very nice people in the world who are here to help.
