The boring bit
I started skating in Suffolk some time around 1989. Using the word ‘skating’ might be over-egging it somewhat. I had a flat skateboard with solid pvc plastic wheels.
I grew up in Wickham Market, which was a lovely place to grow up, but offered very little to the teenage skate-obsessed me. The roads were mostly loose gravel and skateparks were something that only existed in the hallowed pages of RAD magazine.
Still I happily bimbled about the village, with my main (and only) trick being the ability to move forward, steer and not fall off. My crappy skateboard eventually fell apart and my enthusiasm for skating diminished as my passion for playing bass guitar increased.
When I was about seventeen years old a friend sold me his Mike Smith miniramp setup, my first proper skateboard. I continued to skate, but never really progressed and mostly used my skateboard as a mode of transport.
The mildly interesting bit
About ten years ago something fantastic started happening in Suffolk. Skateparks started to get built. Everywhere. Even in Wickham Market. One day while visiting my parents in Wickham Market my daughter and I decided to check out the skatepark. This is when the skating bug bit me hard. I had never lost interest in skating, but having never skated an actual skatepark before I had no idea on what I was missing out on. Skating looks cool, but feels amazing.
Aged 39 I decided to buy a new skateboard. Sure the Mike Smith had served me well for over twenty years, but it weighed a TON compared to modern skateboards. The kid who lived next door is a skater, and when he picked up my board he asked if it was waterlogged.
The properly interesting bit.
Suffolk is full of amazing skateparks. Even tiny villages have a skatepark. This blog is a record of my attempt to skate them all. I’m a pretty crappy skater so don’t follow this blog expecting to be wowed by my mad skillz, but if you live in or near Suffolk then hopefully you’ll find my photos, maps and videos useful and interesting.
