Live gig review, 27th May 2023, London Barbican

We’ve been fans of Rival Consoles for many years, so a Rival Consoles show at The Barbican in London was a no-brainer for us, and the fact that Hainbach was the support made this a gig we had to go to.

We recorded this live review episode on the day of the gig – the 27th May, 2023.

This episode of the Beat Motel podcast is another one of our documentary-style live music reviews. Please let us know what you think of this format. We think it adds to the story of any event we’re covering in a way that hopefully shares the vibe and some of those indefinable aspects of having a great night out.

On a technical level, this is the first episode of the Beat Motel podcast recorded entirely on an iPhone using the Anchor/Spotify Podcasters app and the Dolby On app. The Anchor app worked nicely, but it appears to have added a short slapback-style echo to the recordings, which is annoying. The Dolby On app did the same, and even if audio is exported with the Dolby ‘feature’ disengaged, the echo is still present. Why am I telling you this? Because I know a bunch of our listeners are audiophiles and sound engineers, it might interest them!

Thanks to Matt Read, AKA Fantastic Rectangles for getting involved with this episode.

We gave a lot of thought about whether we should post any photos from the event. We decided that the remarkable light show was such an important part of the event’s aesthetic that a few crappy iPhone pictures wouldn’t do it justice. So instead, here’s a photo showing the beauty and majesty of the auditorium at The Barbican.
